House of Agnes, Canterbury, Kent

An inn since the 13th century, this beautiful building offers boutique-style themed rooms, free Wi-Fi and free parking, 200 metres from Canterbury West Station. 4-star 'Highly Commended' award from the AA.

House of Agnes has been extensively renovated by its current owners. There is a modern bar and the largest public walled garden in Canterbury.

Each en suite room is designed to represent a great world city, such as Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai or Marrakesh. All have LCD flat-screen TVs, DVD players (selection available) and docking stations for MP3 players.

A full English breakfast is served in the airy conservatory, using local organic produce where possible.

The House of Agnes is just 100 metres from the very heart of Canterbury’s city centre. In fact, it is the only hotel to have such a large garden and grounds in the most prime location in the city. There are many places to visit in Canterbury, including the famous cathedral and an array of museums, restaurants and shops. The city is also only a short drive from many coastal towns, such as Whitstable.

The House of Agnes takes its name from the Charles Dickens' story, David Copperfield. In the book, the building was the home of Agnes Wickfield and several passages describe aspects of both the exterior and interior of the historic building.

The heritage garden and buildings are rich in history; as well as Roman artefacts, an extremely rare scientific instrument, known as an “astrolabic quadrant” and dating from 1388 was unearthed during recent renovations. It was described as "one of the greatest ever scientific discoveries of its kind in the world" and is currently on show at the British Museum.

Themed rooms offer our discerning clientèle the opportunity to indulge themselves by spending the day in Canterbury and the night in Paris.
